The Solo Moroccan caress

A solo holiday, what does that authentically mean? A term coined by the tour manufactures this authentically just means a traveller booking on their own - it authentically doesn't mean authentically going it alone, or at least not these days. Solo holidays are big company and the earnings from 30, 40, 50, 60 and even 70 plus singletons going on tour is growing rapidly. You're no longer alone if you're single; in fact you can book a 'solo holiday' and tour with up to 25 other people! So even if you're just a lady finding for a break without her partner or a young 18 year old lad finding for some excitement in the big wide world what are your options?

Book a group escorted tour with a Guide to show you around, and fullness of other travellers to share the taste with. Your group could be with other solos, couples or groups of friends.

Book

Book a solo's only holiday where every other traveller is of policy single! These are more like dating holidays if you ask me and there's all the time too many women and not sufficient men. The upside is you're with others who understand the town that is singledom.

Go it authentically alone! This selection is the least entertaining for someone new to solo tour and inadvisable for lone women heading to the more dangerous countries. Although you're likely to meet others on the way this selection is lonely.

So once you've chosen one of the options above, where to on your first adventure?

Morocco Holidays

It's your first solo trip so play it safe. A week away with strangers on a new type of holiday will be an experience, usually a good one but it might not be for you. So with this in mind book something close to home, a short fairly westernised area and cheap, like Morocco. Morocco is a splendid heady mix of exotic spices, elaborately decorated architecture, old and new, and historical charm. In the mountains you can leave from the hot summer sun and walk the Atlas trails, stay in villages which have barely moved on from the middle ages or relax in five star retreats, perfect with a pool.

Heading south from the Mountains you hit hectic, crazy Marrakech. The buzzing traveler destination is a must see for those on a group tour - haggle in the markets with your new found mates and share bucket loads of the refreshing mint tea before sampling one or many of the 200 bars on offer. Marrakech is a highlight although three or four nights is probably enough.

Away from Marrakech Morocco has everything, beaches, historical ruins, film sets, a huge desert (perfect for sand boarding) and an ancient culture still very much embedded into everyday life. Essaouira is the old pirate's hangout on the Atlantic Coast, a hippy town very much about relaxing and enjoying the views of everyday life in a fishing port. You will also find families here on holiday but don't let that put you off.

For historical sites head to Ait Benhaddou, a excellent example of ancient desert settlements, huge house have been built into the sand and rock and the whole town is a deep red. This was the set for the film Gladiator so you may recognize it. In the north the medieval towns of Fez and imperial Rabat are well worth exploring and sport splendid architecture.

Over all Morocco offers something for everyone. It isn't too far from home should you determine solo trips aren't for you, and the food should be well-known to you. There's fullness of activity to keep you busy and if you determine to have a rest then there's fullness of coast line to chill out on.

Time to give Morocco the solo go?
